Shprayz Ikh Mir

I go a’ walking with quick, quick steps,
to the fair, to the fair to buy a horse,
with my purse a’ ringing, ringing
and singing, singing myself a little song.

It’s still far, very far, to the city,
and here’s a tavern by the roadside, by the roadside
wide open is the door, is the door
innkeeper, give a glass, a glass to me!

Another glass, another, another glass
the innkee — the innkeeper pours.
Who cares about the city or the fair
I don’t need any horse, don’t need it.

Didn’t buy the horse, didn’t buy,
and I drank the money, it’s long gone,
and now I am jumping, jumping from my troubles
and singing, singing myself a little song.

Shprayz ikh mir mit gikhe, mit gikhe trit,
Nokh a ferdl tsum yarid, tsum yarid,
Mitn tayster kling ikh mir, kling ikh mir,
Un a lidl zing ikh mir, zing ikh mir. . .

Tsu der shtot iz vayt nokh, zeyer vayt,
Shteyt a kretshme bay der zayt, bay der zayt,
Breyt tseefnt iz di tir, iz di tir,
— Kretshmer, gib a glezl, a glezl mir!

Nokh a glezl, nokh eyns, nokh a gloz
Gist mir on der bale — der balebos.
Vos mir shtot un ven mir, ven yarid,
Az keyn ferdl darf ikh nit, darf ikh nit.

S’ferdl hob ikh nit gekoyft, nit gekoyft,

שטײט אַ קרעטשמע בײַ דער זײַט, בײַ דער זײַט;

To the Fair

Dai-dai…

Another glass, another, another class

the innkee — the innkeeper pours.

Who cares about the city or the fair

Translation

I will say to you so that you would hear
"I love you."
When you speak with your eyes,
I would fly with you wherever you wish -
I do not care where."
When you have a bit of sense
And when you show your childlike little smile
When you are wild as an Indian
Even if you were a Galitzyaner,
I say: It doesn't bother me.

To me, you are lovely,
To me, you are charming.
To me, you are the only one in the world.
To me, you are lovely,
To me, you are charming,
To me, you are more precious than money.

Many pretty girls Wanted me for a husband
But among them all I chose only you.

Notes: the clip here is from a great CD Oy, It's Good by the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra (here sung first in Yiddish, then in English). In his book "The Essential Klezmer," (published by Algonquin Bookds of Chapel Hill in 2000) Seth Rogovoy reports it was originally written for a Yiddish theater production "I would if I Could," in 1932.

Al Hanisim to copy, paste and print on 2 pages

This really does not belong on my Yiddish blog because it is Hebrew, not Yiddish, but it's a convenient place to put it for now.

Al Hanisim reduced here to print on 2 pages):

v’al hanisim v’al hapurkan v’al hag’vurot v’al hatshu’ot v’al hamilkhamot she’asita l’avoteinu bayamim hahem bazman hazeh

And for the miracles and for the wonders and for the mighty deeds and for the salvations and for the victories that you wrought for our ancestors in their days and in this day

In the days of Mattathias son of Yohanan the high priest, the Hasmonean, and his sons, when the evil kingdom of Greece stood against your people Israel in order to make them forget your Torah and violate your laws

                         ----------------------------

You, in your enormous mercy, stood up for them in their time of great need, upheld their cause, judged their case, and avenged their oppressors.

                     ---------------------------------------

You delivered the mighty into the hands of the week, the many into the hands of the few, the impure into the hands of the pure, the wicked into the hands of the righteous, and the degenerates into the hands of those who cling to your Torah

                   --------------------------------------

And you made for yourself a great and holy name in your world, and performed a great salvation and miracle for your people Israel, as you do today.

And afterward, your children came to the Holy of Holies in your House, and they cleansed your Palace and purified your Temple and they kindled lights in the courtyard of your Sanctuary and they established these eight days of Hanukkah to give thanks and to praise your great name.  ###
